Word Family Songs Animated Videos!

Our animated Word Family Songs Video collection is designed to help kids learn to read CVC (consonant-vowel-consonant) words! These active, catchy songs are the perfect way to help kindergarten, pre-k, or first grade kids learn to read word families, learn decoding strategies, blending sounds, rhyming words, phonics, phonemic awareness, and so much more!  If you need to help kids learn to read, this is perfect for your pre-reader, emergent reader, ESL, ELL, or special needs students, children with dyslexia, or anyone who needs to learn the decoding strategy of phoneme blending.


You may already own the non-animated version of this DVD, formerly titled, Sound Blending Songs for Word Families.  The songs on this version are the same, but the animated version is MUCH better because the letters stretch and grow as they are sounded out, and that visual seems to make a WORLD of difference, at least to my students! Of course, the animated version features our new, younger actors and actresses! My boys really respond to seeing other male actors on screen, and of course having a diverse cast represented on screen is definitely a plus! I have been using this new version with my Transitional Kindergarten (TK) class for the last six weeks or so, and I can tell you that it has been EXTREMELY effective! They are getting SOOOO good at reading those CVC words, and most of them only just turned five around November!




We all know that sight words are important, but children simply cannot learn to read without a strong foundation in phonics and phonemic awareness, and these word family songs will help get them started! Our word family songs teach kids to sound out CVC word families, which form the basic foundation of phonics: giving each sound in a simple, three letter word, and blending those sounds together to make a word.The truth is that kids can’t learn to read well without understanding phonics and word families.






So how do these word family songs help?  For example, the At Word Family Song takes children through the steps of sounding out -at word family words, such as “cat,” “hat,” and “mat.” There are songs for 15 three letter, CVC words (consonant-vowel-consonant word families) that show kids in kindergarten, pre-K, and first grade exactly how to decode and blend sounds together. This fun and friendly, multi-sensory method of learning to read is appealing to pre-readers and invites them to sing and dance along again and again!






Repetition is especially helpful to young readers with the symptoms dyslexia, as well as ELL and ESL students who often require multiple reiterations of a lesson in order to learn. They won't want to cooperate if they don't like it, so capturing their attention and maintaining their cooperation is essential! If they LIKE it, then half of the "battle" is already won!




Word families include: -at, -an, -it, -in, -ig, -ip, -op, -ot, -ox, -et, -en, -eg, -ug, -ut, -un.

There is also a song about nonsense words and what they are, a song that teaches kids to blend two sounds together, a song that teaches kids to read two letter words, and a song the explains how to sound out a word!

Teaching Kids to WRITE the Numbers! – FREE Number Poems!

Teaching children to write the numbers  correctly can be very frustrating for early childhood teachers! Also, attempting to GRADE their writing can be equally TRICKY! What does a number written correctly look like, versus one that is not?  In this post, I am going to tell you how I teach my students to write the numbers. Creepy Crayon: Free Craft Template!

Teaching Phoneme Segmentation: Separating Sounds in Words (Freebies!)

Teaching children to pick out all of the phonemes (or sounds) in a given word can be tricky!  This requires good listening skills and well developed phonemic awareness in general.  For some children, mastering phoneme segmentation can seem just about impossible!  Here are some teaching tips that have worked for me in the past. *  The best advice I can give is to practice segmenting words with a designated MOTION for a short time every single day with your whole class.  Even just one or two minutes per day will help! Look for suggested motions on this post. Tips for Using the Michael Heggerty Phonemic Awareness Book

Here are my best tips, hints, and advice for teaching phonemic awareness with the Michael Heggerty Phonemic Awareness Curriculum , which is an amazing resource for Pre-K, Kindergarten, and primary teachers.  Once you know how to use it, it takes NO PREP TIME whatsoever, and the payoffs are HUGE!  However, until you develop a routine for using it that keeps your class engaged, it can be difficult to implement.  In this post, I will show you how I have made this curriculum work well for me, how to make the lessons go smoothly, and show you a video of my Transitional Kindergarten (TK) class doing the daily exercises. An EASY Critical Thinking Game for K/1 Kids!

Today I'm going to tell you about a fun and EASY game to help boost critical thinking skills in Kindergarten or First Graders!  I call it The Critical Thinking Comparison Game, because in it, the kids are simply comparing one thing to another and telling what they think are the similarities and differences between two objects.  Believe it or not, my first graders LOVE this game and often ask me if we can play it again!  I think they like it because the game makes them feel successful and "smart."  I have also played it with Kindergartners, and they enjoyed it, too! 20 Hands-On Ways to Build a Sight Word, (And Research to Back it Up!)

Today I am pleased to share TWENTY great ideas for building the sight words to help kids learn them in a hands-on way!  Making sight words (AKA high frequency words) in lots of different ways allows kids to choose their best learning modality and really take charge of their own learning. I'm super excited about this way of teaching, and I hope you will be, too! When my teammate and I do this, we focus on just ONE of the trickier sight words per week and have the kids BUILD JUST THAT ONE WORD over and over again in many ways.   If there happens to be a parent volunteer at that center, they are to ask the children to spell it and tell what the word is often. This is what our Sight Word Building Table looks like.  We put out a variety of choices, and the children can change seats each time they finish to keep building the word.  If there happens to be a volunteer, she ask them what word they are working on and to spell it, and will hand them a different manipulative.

A Twist on the Headband Game!

Here’s a fun, new, twist on the classic Headband Game that makes it reusable and adaptable to any subject and any level!  AND it gets the kids up and moving as they learn, so that’s an even greater bonus!!!!  This awesome idea was suggested by a participant in one of my workshops when I presented the Sight Word Headband Game and wondered aloud how to make this adaptable to kids in higher grades that learn their new words much more quickly.  So I tried it out myself, and voilá!  It worked out great!  My own class has done this now a few times and they LOVE it! So here is how it works; I’ll remind you of the my original version first.  With the original  Sight Word Headband Game , I wrote a word on a strip of paper and formed it into a headband.  The kids all put one on, and then walked around the room and wrote the words that they found on their friends’ heads next to their friends’ names on a sheet of paper.
