Christmas Count the Room & Write the Room! (EDITABLE!)

Today I'd like to tell you about TWO NEW products up on my Teachers Pay Teachers store:  Christmas Count the Room AND Write the Room!  My class has been having a ball with these activities during the last few weeks, and now they are EXPERTS at hunting down anything I may choose to hide in my room, LOL!  If I hide it, they will definitely read it and/or count it!  If you are unfamiliar with this type of activity, then you are in for a TREAT!  Just WAIT until you see how much fun this is!





Write the Room

Write the Room is super fun because the kids get to go on a word hunt all around the room!  You print and post the word cards all around the room.  And then the kids get to GET UP, and walk around the room with clipboard and a recording sheet, and write the words next to the matching holiday picture.  So if the word "the" is next to the present on the card, they write the word "the" next to the present on their recording sheet.




The cool thing about this particular "Write the Room" product is that it is EDITABLE!!!  YOU get to fill in the words of your choice so that your kids can practice writing the words that they are working on. All you have to do is delete and type over the words that are already written there, and that’s it! Print out your word cards and (sorta kinda) "hide them” around the classroom so that your children can go on a word hunt!




We actually took the words "sight words" off of the recording sheet, so that you can put in spelling words, letters, or anything else you can think of. It’s up to you!



 




There are two different styles of recording sheets to choose from with lined spaces or just blank spaces to write in, and both are provided in black and white AND color, so you can choose what you like. But my kids LOVE to color the pictures when they are done, so I always print them in black and white.

Count the Room, PLUS Present Find and Count!




This Christmas themed "Count the Room" activity (in both color and black and white) is a great way for ACTIVE children to practice their number recognition and counting for numbers 1-20!  It is done just the same as the Write the Room activity, but is instead of writing words the kids are counting and writing numbers.




Print out your number cards and (sort of) "hide them” around the classroom so that your children can go on a number hunt! They walk around the room with a clipboard or a hard surface, and write the number of objects on each card they find along the way on their recording sheet.  The cards go all the way up to 20, but there are only ten spaces on the recording sheet.  So, the expectation is that the kids would only be looking for ten cards per day- probably either 1-10, or 11-20.  We have even tried to do 6-15!




The "Present Find and Count" Activity is another fun twist on the Count the Room activity, but this time, children find "presents/gift bags" around the room, and count the objects inside. Then they record the number of objects that they find on their recording sheet.




You may want to have your kids count something like holiday mini erasers, or pompoms, whatever!  (We switched to pompoms because the little erasers kept getting stuck in the bags!) One thing that really helped my kids was to give them each a small plastic basket to carry around. I told them to dump the objects into the basket, and then count them back into the bag.




I also recommend that you be VERY CLEAR to the children that they are not supposed to take the presents with them... or take the things inside the bags!  A few of my kids were confused, and were collecting the pompoms with them as they went along, which left none in the bags for the children that came after them!  LOL!  My sweet children were just fine with putting them back, but I wished I had been a little more clear when I explained it.




There are a few different versions of the recording sheet, to give you options to choose what works best in your classroom! One version is a blank space, for children to simply write the numeral down in the space provided. The second version is a lined version, for children to write the numeral or the number word on the line provided. The third has a number line or word bank on the bottom of the paper, for those who might need some added help of what the number looks like, or how to spell the number word correctly.




All versions are provided in black and white AND color, so you can choose what you like. But my kids LOVE to color the pictures when they are done!

Teaching Second Graders to Write a Biography Report (Free Sample!)

This year, I found out that the all of the second graders at my school would need to read a BIOGRAPHY of a famous person and then write a report on it!  So I created an Easy Biography Graphic Organizer and Book Report Lapbook for them!  It turned out to be a GREAT way to introduce them to writing a first biography! So while my first graders were writing their insect reports (see last week's post on that!) I needed to have my second graders working on their biographies. So what is a combination class teacher to do?  The biography reports were similar in format to the insect lapbook so that I could try to work with both groups at the same time.  Luckily, I was able to introduce the concept of the biographies and do a practice one with the second graders alone one day when all of the first graders left on an all day field trip.  Thank goodness! Teaching Phoneme Segmentation: Separating Sounds in Words (Freebies!)

Teaching children to pick out all of the phonemes (or sounds) in a given word can be tricky!  This requires good listening skills and well developed phonemic awareness in general.  For some children, mastering phoneme segmentation can seem just about impossible!  Here are some teaching tips that have worked for me in the past. *  The best advice I can give is to practice segmenting words with a designated MOTION for a short time every single day with your whole class.  Even just one or two minutes per day will help! Look for suggested motions on this post. A Twist on the Headband Game!

Here’s a fun, new, twist on the classic Headband Game that makes it reusable and adaptable to any subject and any level!  AND it gets the kids up and moving as they learn, so that’s an even greater bonus!!!!  This awesome idea was suggested by a participant in one of my workshops when I presented the Sight Word Headband Game and wondered aloud how to make this adaptable to kids in higher grades that learn their new words much more quickly.  So I tried it out myself, and voilá!  It worked out great!  My own class has done this now a few times and they LOVE it! So here is how it works; I’ll remind you of the my original version first.  With the original  Sight Word Headband Game , I wrote a word on a strip of paper and formed it into a headband.  The kids all put one on, and then walked around the room and wrote the words that they found on their friends’ heads next to their friends’ names on a sheet of paper. Tips for Using the Michael Heggerty Phonemic Awareness Book

Here are my best tips, hints, and advice for teaching phonemic awareness with the Michael Heggerty Phonemic Awareness Curriculum , which is an amazing resource for Pre-K, Kindergarten, and primary teachers.  Once you know how to use it, it takes NO PREP TIME whatsoever, and the payoffs are HUGE!  However, until you develop a routine for using it that keeps your class engaged, it can be difficult to implement.  In this post, I will show you how I have made this curriculum work well for me, how to make the lessons go smoothly, and show you a video of my Transitional Kindergarten (TK) class doing the daily exercises. An EASY Critical Thinking Game for K/1 Kids!

Today I'm going to tell you about a fun and EASY game to help boost critical thinking skills in Kindergarten or First Graders!  I call it The Critical Thinking Comparison Game, because in it, the kids are simply comparing one thing to another and telling what they think are the similarities and differences between two objects.  Believe it or not, my first graders LOVE this game and often ask me if we can play it again!  I think they like it because the game makes them feel successful and "smart."  I have also played it with Kindergartners, and they enjoyed it, too! Help! My Child Keeps Failing AR Tests!

Hello!  Today I would like to tell you a little bit about how you can help kids improve their reading comprehension in general, and do better on AR (Accelerated Reader) quizzes if they have to take them!  If you're are not familiar with Accelerated Reader, AR (for short) is an online reading comprehension quiz program that many schools use to motivate children to read more, with the goal of at least 85% comprehension as an average for every book that is read.  If your child or several children in your class continually read AR books but fail these quizzes, what can you do to help?  I am hoping to give some suggestions that could work both at home and at school.  And teachers, there is a downloadable PDF copy of the "10 Great Ways to Boost Reading Comprehension" for AR Tests that you can send home with your students at the end of this post.  Thanks!
