TK Distance Learning Packet: SPRING - CHICK Theme - Week 10!

Here's my Spring Week 10 Distance Learning packet for TK! My packet this week has a CHICK theme!!  In this file, you will find all of the work for one week of school for TK, with some worksheets that will work for Kindergarten, for both Math and Language Arts subjects. We've included a variety of worksheets and activities, so feel free to use any or all of it with your students! 



My first week of hybrid instruction is now under my belt! I’m supposed to be teaching virtual and in-person simultaneously. I won’t lie- the first day was a complete disaster, and the second day was not as bad but still a dumpster fire. BUT then things started to improve after Wednesday.  It was a tough week, but so wonderful to have some of my babies in the room with me! And let me tell you, AGAIN because I know I've said it before - these packets are a LIFE SAVER in trying to maintain my sanity! So, again, whether you're also doing hybrid teaching, all online teaching, or all in-person teaching, I hope you find these packets helpful as well!

This week focuses on: Reviewing Letters A-Z, lowercase, Reviewing Numbers 0-20, Letter fluency practice for letters W, X, Y, Z mix capital & lowercase, Hatching Chick Alphabet Writing A-Z, lowercase*, Number Fluency Chart: 0, 5, 10, 15, 20, Trapezoid/Rectangle fluency chart, Sentence Writing practice, Crazy Chick Number Writing*, Rhymes Chicks worksheet*, Finger Counting Addition & Workmat, Concepts of Print: Read & Count the Words worksheet, What Goes Together? Chick themed Classification worksheet*, Chicken & the Egg patterns




Hands on activities include: How a Chick Grows sequencing craft, Chick Craft, Hen Craft, Rooster - crayon resist with watercolor, Add the Room Chicks activity*, Fishing for Sight Words, Hatching Chicks Addition craft

*Note: This packet contains a few worksheets and activities from our Distance Learning TK/Kinder: Chicks packet, which was created in Spring 2020 when COVID-19 and distance learning first happened. The pages from this worksheet are indicated by the * in the list above.



In my experiences, children in TK generally need much more time to learn, and even more developmentally appropriate, hands-on activities than are necessary for most children in Kindergarten. A list of recommended HeidiSongs music videos for the week is also included, and it links to our HeidiSongs internet video site. However, a subscription to our internet video streaming site is not included. You are welcome to eliminate this page as needed.



We've divided everything up by day of the week, (Monday-Friday) so you have the option of sending this entire packet to students, with everything labeled out on what to do each day! Permission is granted to distribute to families/students in your classroom. We've also included an editable Weekly Lesson Plan page, for those who may want to only include bits and pieces from our packet, or add in worksheets of their own. Each item in this packet is the very similar to the ones I would have done in the classroom. In fact, I am just using my lesson plans from both TK and K to create it!



You may notice that there are lots of hands-on activities for math included. However, on each of these “worksheets,” (which are more like parent handouts), I have stated on it that it is fine to substitute another type of toy or manipulative, such as Lego bricks, etc.



Again, many have asked, so I wrote a blog all about my daily virtual schedule! I talk about the schedule I try and keep to most days, along with any other resources I use, where to get them, and how I use a variety of tools to help support my teaching and my students learning as much as possible! Some of the most valuable resources I use daily is our Letter of the Week via Google Slides and Number of the Day via Google Slides.

Teaching Second Graders to Write a Biography Report (Free Sample!)

This year, I found out that the all of the second graders at my school would need to read a BIOGRAPHY of a famous person and then write a report on it!  So I created an Easy Biography Graphic Organizer and Book Report Lapbook for them!  It turned out to be a GREAT way to introduce them to writing a first biography! So while my first graders were writing their insect reports (see last week's post on that!) I needed to have my second graders working on their biographies. So what is a combination class teacher to do?  The biography reports were similar in format to the insect lapbook so that I could try to work with both groups at the same time.  Luckily, I was able to introduce the concept of the biographies and do a practice one with the second graders alone one day when all of the first graders left on an all day field trip.  Thank goodness! Phonics Coloring Worksheets for Word Families! (Freebies!)

Teaching Phoneme Segmentation: Separating Sounds in Words (Freebies!)

Teaching children to pick out all of the phonemes (or sounds) in a given word can be tricky!  This requires good listening skills and well developed phonemic awareness in general.  For some children, mastering phoneme segmentation can seem just about impossible!  Here are some teaching tips that have worked for me in the past. *  The best advice I can give is to practice segmenting words with a designated MOTION for a short time every single day with your whole class.  Even just one or two minutes per day will help! Look for suggested motions on this post. There is also a downloadable list of words to use, plus a homework sheet that you can download here. A Twist on the Headband Game!

Here’s a fun, new, twist on the classic Headband Game that makes it reusable and adaptable to any subject and any level!  AND it gets the kids up and moving as they learn, so that’s an even greater bonus!!!!  This awesome idea was suggested by a participant in one of my workshops when I presented the Sight Word Headband Game and wondered aloud how to make this adaptable to kids in higher grades that learn their new words much more quickly.  So I tried it out myself, and voilá!  It worked out great!  My own class has done this now a few times and they LOVE it! So here is how it works; I’ll remind you of the my original version first.  With the original  Sight Word Headband Game , I wrote a word on a strip of paper and formed it into a headband.  The kids all put one on, and then walked around the room and wrote the words that they found on their friends’ heads next to their friends’ names on a sheet of paper. Tips for Using the Michael Heggerty Phonemic Awareness Book

Here are my best tips, hints, and advice for teaching phonemic awareness with the Michael Heggerty Phonemic Awareness Curriculum , which is an amazing resource for Pre-K, Kindergarten, and primary teachers.  Once you know how to use it, it takes NO PREP TIME whatsoever, and the payoffs are HUGE!  However, until you develop a routine for using it that keeps your class engaged, it can be difficult to implement.  In this post, I will show you how I have made this curriculum work well for me, how to make the lessons go smoothly, and show you a video of my Transitional Kindergarten (TK) class doing the daily exercises. An EASY Critical Thinking Game for K/1 Kids!

Today I'm going to tell you about a fun and EASY game to help boost critical thinking skills in Kindergarten or First Graders!  I call it The Critical Thinking Comparison Game, because in it, the kids are simply comparing one thing to another and telling what they think are the similarities and differences between two objects.  Believe it or not, my first graders LOVE this game and often ask me if we can play it again!  I think they like it because the game makes them feel successful and "smart."  I have also played it with Kindergartners, and they enjoyed it, too! Help! My Child Keeps Failing AR Tests!

Hello!  Today I would like to tell you a little bit about how you can help kids improve their reading comprehension in general, and do better on AR (Accelerated Reader) quizzes if they have to take them!  If you're are not familiar with Accelerated Reader, AR (for short) is an online reading comprehension quiz program that many schools use to motivate children to read more, with the goal of at least 85% comprehension as an average for every book that is read.  If your child or several children in your class continually read AR books but fail these quizzes, what can you do to help?  I am hoping to give some suggestions that could work both at home and at school.  And teachers, there is a downloadable PDF copy of the "10 Great Ways to Boost Reading Comprehension" for AR Tests that you can send home with your students at the end of this post.  Thanks!
